This is the day: happy birthday to me!
As I told you earlier in my last blog; the next 366 days (2020 is a leap year) I will pay tribute to someone who died at my age. Today I’m 37 years old. Hendrickje Stoffels, Rembrandt’s mistress, died at the age of 37. I chose to pay her a 366 day long tribute.
Why did I choose Hendrickje Stoffels?
Multiple reasons. For starters it is easier to pay tribute to someone who have lived in the Netherlands, because this way I can trace her steps easier. Second, I like paying tribute to a woman, and third: 2019 is the Rembrandt year. Art loving Dutchmen decided to pay a 365 day long tribute to Rembrandt; I guess I join them by paying this tribute to his mistress. And yes; I think Hendrickje Stoffels is a very interesting person who deserves a tribute.
What will the tribute look like?
That’s a good question. I did some research how people pay tribute to the deceased. I came up with this list:
- Carry out the final wishes of the deceased
- Continue life’s work or passion of the deceased
- Create a lasting memorial
I don’t know if Hendrickje Stoffels had a final wish or what her life’s work was. But I’m planning to find out. This next year I will dedicate the first 3 months (a quarter year) on visiting / reading memorials to Hendrickje Stoffels. The next quarter I will continue her life’s work or passion, somehow. The third quarter I will carry out her final wishes, while I will create a lasting memorial to Hendrickje in the last quarter year.
I will keep you posted.
